My Story

I was born in a small town in the United States in Iowa. From a young age, I desired to explore and travel the world.  Additionally, art, music, and dance were an important part of my childhood and inspired me to learn about other cultures and languages.  Living and working in countries like Brazil, Costa Rica, and Spain, I’ve struggled to communicate effectively in Galician, Spanish and Portuguese.

I was the first woman to get a PhD in my family. This is my advisor, Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings who mentored me in multicultural education.

My own fluency journey and challenges speaking these languages pushed me to feel empathy for others on the same journey and it sparked my desire to help them reach their fluency goals. I’ve failed many interviews and I’ve been criticized for my strong accent.  All of these failures motivated me to focus on improving my speaking skills in my target languages. For me, language learning is a journey, not a destination so I constantly am learning new ways to improve my fluency and sharing these strategies with my students.

I love helping students pass the TOEFL language exam because it helps them achieve their deepest goals in life.

Over the years, I’ve had to pass a multitude of exams for my career, and the process of preparing for these exams in Portuguese, Galician, and Spanish helped me see exam preparation as a bridge to help people achieve their greatest desires. My greatest dream was to live abroad and “fit in” in the country both professionally and linguistically. What’s your long-term fluency goal? After much coaching and collaboration, for many of my students, fluency is no longer a dream, it’s a reality.
